Dean's Welcome
Truly great regions have at their heart truly great universities. Scratch the surface of any great university and you will find a noteworthy College of Arts and Sciences.
With that in mind, I am pleased to welcome you to the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) at Northern Kentucky University. As you explore our website, you will recognize the source of our pride. You will find the arts and humanities which challenge us with the joys and pains of being human, yet also transcend that humanity. You will discover the natural sciences which dig deeply into the nature of our world, from the microscopic to the astronomical. On the journey, you will also find the social and behavioral sciences which look at how we act and interact with others—now and in the past. Throughout the college our faculty, staff, and students investigate, uncover, discover, and inform. Our students learn to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and learn to respect diverse points of view. As you can see, we “A&S-ers” are a very inquisitive lot!
We are proud of our faculty’s scholarly work, work which finds them in settings ranging from sterile laboratories and studios on campus to field settings and concert halls around the corner and around the globe. They present their work to inform and entertain audiences locally, and share it with colleagues across the United States and the world. Our pride extends to our students, who serve as true collaborators with our faculty in their research, performances, and presentations—gaining valuable hands-on educational experiences that are transformative. These collaborations are possible because of our small classes, community connections, and close working relationships between students and their professors.
We are impressed, though not surprised, by the accomplishments of our graduates. Our alumni often follow career paths which seem divergent from their academic major. The beauty of an Arts and Sciences degree is that it provides the foundation for the journey of a lifetime. We train lifelong learners who are deep thinkers, able to critically evaluate problems and develop real-world solutions. We take great pride in the knowledge that our alums see through the superficial to the truly meaningful. They are both idealistic and practical.
I trust that you will find much that distinguishes our College as noteworthy. I hope you enjoy your visit to our website, and visit us again and again on your lifelong learning journey!
