Student Anthropology Society

Club

Founded in 1975, the Anthropology Club, and its successor organization, the Student Anthropology Society, is open to any NKU student with an interest in anthropology. About 100 NKU students have a major in anthropology. While anthropology majors and minors are encouraged to join, membership is not limited to anthropology majors and minors. There are no dues, and membership is free. The faculty sponsor is Dr. Timothy D. Murphy (email), and the 2007-2008 officers are President: Amy Joy Meijer; Vice President: Christine Williamson; Treasurer: A. Laine Caldwell; Secretaries: Susan Banks and Julie Ashton; and Web Designer: Suzanne Barton. The society sponsors speakers, events, field trips, trips to professional meetings, careers workshops, pizza parties, and ethnic dinners; and has developed a student-run web page. To raise money the club holds bake sales and sells original T-shirts. The Student Anthropology Society is a recent winner of the United Way Outstanding Service Award given by NKU Student Government. The awards plaque hangs near the departmental office in Landrum. The new anthropology T-shirt--featuring Maori tattooing on the front and the AAA quote, "Only anthropology seeks to study the whole panorama--in geographic space and evolutionary time--of human existence" on the back--was designed by applied cultural studies major Stephanie Lakeman. To find out more about the society, or to purchase one of the new club T-shirts for $10, please call Dr. Murphy at 859-572-6591 or email.
