Museum Methods (Anthropology 307): offered spring semester each year
This course provides a broad prospective on museum issues and practices. Readings, discussion, and written assignments explore the historical, theoretical, and political dimensions of museums from an anthropological perspective. Topics include registration and records, care of collections, conservation, architecture and accessibility, mission statements, museum education, exhibition planning and design, membership, marketing, development, and management. Students are expected to participate in several fieldtrip to local museums. Students also evaluate virtual exhibits and examine major exhibit controversies. The Northern Kentucky Museum of Anthropology is a focal point of this course. Opportunities for practical experience in administration, collections management, as well as exhibit display and interpretation are also offered in this course.
