The purpose of this course is to familiarize prospective teachers with effective methods for teaching mathematics to students in the middle grades.  The emphasis is on teaching for mathematical power, understanding, enjoyment, reasoning, connections, communication, applications, representations and problem solving in a wide range of mathematical areas, including:  number and computation; probability and statistics; geometry and measurement; and algebraic ideas.  Topics include a psychological overview, current recommendations from national and state commissions and organizations, recent research in middle school mathematics learning and teaching strategies, teaching aids including the use of physical models and technology, activities and resources, developing curricula and evaluation tools and current issues in mathematics education.

The guiding content for this course is based upon:

  • Educational Professional Standards Board (EPSB) New Teacher Standards (NTS)

  • Kentucky Curriculum Documents including Academic Expectations(A.E.), Program of Studies (POS) and Core Content for Assessment (CCA)

  • National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Principles and Standards
