How Do I Apply For Financial Aid?

For the Office of Student Financial Assistance to determine if you are eligible for assistance, it is necessary that you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . If you do not hear from the Federal Student Aid Program within 3-4 weeks after filing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA) feel free to call 1-319-337-5665 or 1-800-433-3243 to check your status. To ask general questions regarding calculations of the FAFSA call 1-800-433-3243 Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (EST). To determine your eligibility for financial assistance (grants & loans), it is necessary that you complete the FAFSA and be accepted to NKU as a degree seeking student. The FAFSA can be completed by any of the following means:

DO NOT SUBMIT MORE THAN ONE APPLICATION!!

Please insure that Northern Kentucky University is listed.  NKU's Title IV code is 009275.  Only schools listed will receive your data.

REMINDER: YOU MUST REAPPLY EACH ACADEMIC YEAR FOR FINANCIAL AID

FAFSA Renewal Application

If you were in college last year and meet certain conditions, you can complete a Renewal Application using your PIN number at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

The renewal form will have about 75 percent of the answers default on the application. The student only needs to provide information that is likely to change from year to year and answer the new questions.

Information from the Renewal Application will be used to apply for federal aid and will also be used by states and colleges as a basic application for state and college aid.

Students are encouraged to complete the Renewal Application as early as possible, but not before January 1. Filing an application is just the first step in applying for federal aid.

Students will need to obtain their PIN if they no longer have it in order to complete the online renewal FAFSA.

SUMMER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Summer financial assistance is considered a trailer to the previous fall and spring semesters. This means that if a student uses all the financial assistance that they were eligible for during the fall and spring semester then they have nothing left to use for the summer session. In order to see what you would be eligible for you need to complete the summer application form and return it to our office. You can start applying for summer aid in January.

Verification

Once you submit your FAFSA you may be asked to provide additional information to NKU. The U.S. Department of Education requires that schools verify certain information for accuracy. The purpose of this is to ensure that the students with the highest eligibility for federal funds are given access to these funds.

Some of the materials that may be requested to conduct the verification include:

  • Photocopy of the student's prior year federal tax return, schedules and W-2's
  • Photocopy of the student's birth certificate
  • Photocopy of student's marriage certificate
  • Photocopy of the student's DD214
  • Photocopy of INS Documents if not a U.S. Citizen
  • Photocopy of student's social security card

Determining the Aid Package

The types of financial aid offered can differ from school to school. At NKU all funds awarded by the Student Financial Assistance Office are federal and state. Any funding outside resources MUST be reported to the Financial Assistance Office.

Once your file is complete, your eligibility will be determined and an award notification will be sent.

Transfer Students

You can also request the information be sent to us by calling the Department of Education at 1-800-433-3243.

Loans can not be transferred. You need to reapply through NKU.
