Policies Affecting Transfer Students
Effective Fall 2004, Northern Kentucky University adopted an academic policy that includes the evaluation and award of credit for courses where a student has earned a grade of D+, D, or D- or has received an F. The revised policy does not apply to students who have completed coursework at NKU prior to Fall 2004; nor is it retroactive for students admitted prior to the Fall 2004 semester.

If you are a prospective or currently admitted student, we recommend that you consult with an academic advisor in your individual major for additional information about how this policy may affect you.  Your academic advisor will review your transcript and advise you on the courses best suited for your major.

Transfer students seeking to apply NKU's Bankruptcy Policy or Repeat Option must consult with the Office of the Registrar, located at Lucas Administrative Center Room 301, or by phone at (859) 572-5556.

Transfer coursework is evaluated based on NKU's policies and procedures.  Coursework is entered in accordance to the following rules:

Developmental Coursework:

NKU students who take remedial coursework will not
receive credit for the courses. These courses are defined
as developmental and not to be recognized as college level.
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example:  A student who transfers a course that is
evaluated as NKU's MAH 095 (Beginning Algebra) will not
  receive credit for that course.

Duplicate Credit:

NKU students cannot receive credit for the same (non-
repeatable) course twice.  Transfer students who bring in
two distinct courses that individually equate to the same
NKU course will only receive credit for the first course with
  a passing grade.
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example: Two courses -- ENGL 102 with a grade of D and
ENGL 103 with a grade of C -- are individually determined to
equate to NKU's ENG 101 (College Writing) course.  ENGL
103 will be the one that receives credit.  ENGL 102 will be
  rejected.)

Retake Policy:

NKU students who earn a grade of C- or better in a course
cannot retake that course (unless it is identified by NKU as
a course that can be taken multiple times).  If a student
retakes a course they've earned a C- grade or better in at
their transfer institution, the first course/grade is accepted
and the same course that has been repeated has the hours
removed, and those credits do not transfer to NKU.
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example: A student earns a C- in ENGL 101, retakes it and
earns a B the second time around.  NKU recognizes ENGL
101 with the grade of C- as the one that will be accepted for
  credit.
