Practicum Projects

Below is a list of practicum projects and descriptions that Applied majors have completed.

ADI Research, Inc.: assisted in organizing and overseeing all phases of various marketing-related research projects.

Adult Literacy Program, Campbell County: designed the evaluation instrument for the literacy program; interviewed and surveyed students and tutors about the quality of the (1) reading materials, (2) tutor training, (3) learning experience and (4) relationship

Albright Health Center: assisted Wellness Coordinator in developing a survey to determine faculty and staff use of Albright Health Center, in particular to determine the peak days and hours the facility is used, to identify popular programs, and to determine locker room use.

Athletic Department, NKU: gathered input from interested parties about the qualities a school mascot should possess; designed, administered, and analyzed the results of a survey sent out to NKU students, faculty, athletes, and alumni.

Brighton Center: prepared a report (including a literature review) detailing the potential problems women on welfare are expected to face meeting the requirements of the Welfare Reform Act.

Brighton Center (in collaboration with Dayton Police and Dayton Independent Schools): consulted and collaborated with Dayton Youth Leadership Group to develop a survey instrument with the goal of understanding the connection between truancy and aggressive/assaultive behavior. This also involved distributing the survey, coding responses, and writing a report.

Business Land: investigated the legal and bureaucratic steps Business Land must take in order to offer clients who enroll in their courses a unit of continuing education credit (CES).

Career Development Center, NKU: produced a video "Real Life 101: Making the Most of Your College Experience." Project involved interviewing local employers to learn what skills they are looking for in college graduates. Project also involved taping interview and editing transcripts.

Cincinnati Environmental Advisory Council: investigated various pollution prevention efforts initiated at the local level in urban areas the size of Greater Cincinnati; wrote a report, and presented the findings to the council.

Community Attachment Survey (Boone, Kenton, Campbell counties): under the direction of Dr. Boni Li assisted in all phases of a survey research project designed to assess community attachment in three counties undergoing rapid change and growth.

Comprehensive Educational Services: constructed a satisfaction survey to assess clients' opinions and experiences with a service coordinating the efforts of medical, mental health, and rehabilitation professionals; school officials; and families involved in meeting the needs of mentally and physically handicapped students.

Covington Latin School: evaluated their Advanced Placement [AP] curriculum. Project included constructing assessment instrument, administering assessment instrument, and writing report.

Devou Park, Montague Cemetery: researched the practices governing burial of plantation owners and their slaves between the years 1840 and 1880. Identified the boundaries of the Montague cemetery to determine if a proposed golf course intruded on those boundaries; wrote a report.

Devou Park Summer Classics Theatre: constructed a survey assessing satisfaction with Devou Park Summer Classics Theatre and asked respondents about ideas for and interest in programs.

Environmental Resource Center, NKU: assisted the organization in coding and analyzing data from a survey of Boone County residents in which respondents were asked about their leisure and recreational habits and needs.

Erlanger Rescue Squad: studied the usefulness of the pulse oximeter, a device that measures among other things patients' pulse and oxygen levels; investigated the extent to which paramedics use the device properly and how the device figures into paramedics' decisions to treat patients.

Fifth-Third Bank: wrote a proposal identifying the steps needed to establish and fund a transitional housing facility for homeless people. The bank's board used this report to help them make a decision about whether to finance such a project.

Highlands High School, PTA: constructed a survey to determine frequency of alcohol and other drug use among high school students; coded responses and analyzed data.

Intercollegiate Athletics, NKU: surveyed community, faculty, staff, former athletes and students regarding their perceptions and goals as they relate to NKU's Intercollegiate Athletics Program. Project included constructing survey questions, distributing surveys and analyzing the results.

International Student Affairs, NKU: conducted a needs assessment of International Students at NKU. Designed a survey to assess students' (1) academic, social, and personal needs, (2) ratings and opinions of various NKU services, (3) integration into U.S. culture, and (4) satisfaction with International Student Affairs Office.

International Student Affairs, NKU: learned HTML programming and created a webpage for this office. Website contains information of use to international students on campus and to prospective international students needing information on the college and its academic programs.

International Thomson, Wadsworth Publishing: under the direction of Dr. Joan Ferrante; learned HTML programming, designed and created the webpage for the textbook Sociology.net

International Thomson, Wadsworth Publishing: under the direction of Dr. Joan Ferrante; worked as project manager coordinating the work of 8 students involved in creating Soc.net: Sociology on the Internet

Nature Company: conducted wage and benefit survey of warehouse positions and other clerical support occupations; analyzed findings, reported results, and made recommendations.

International Thompson, Wadsworth Publishing: created an Internet resource guide for students using intro to sociology, social problems, and marriage and family textbooks published by the company.

Legal Aid Society of Cincinnati: assessed two legal aid-sponsored programs. Legal Hurdles Project and CRI Project. These assessments involved reviewing client files, interviewing social workers and lawyers, creating assessment instruments, analyzing results, and writing report.

Ludlow Police Department (in collaboration with Ludlow Independent Schools): conducting 12 focus groups with students in grades 9-12 to learn the extent to which underage drinking on school grounds and at school events is a problem.

Montague, Eippert and Associates: market penetration study designed to (1) identify a list of organizations within a 5-mile radius of 5343 Hamilton Avenue that have wellness programs for persons 55 and older (2) determine the number of persons 55 and older living within the 5-mile radius, and (3) determine the household income of this target population.

Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Affairs, NKU: In conjunction with Native American history month conducted internet research to identify high-quality websites devoted to Native American peoples, culture, and history. Created a 12-page brochure of internet sites, including descriptions of information posted on these sites. This brochure was mailed to Greater Cincinnati grade school and high school teachers and to others with an interest in Native Americans.

Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Affairs, NKU: In conjuction with Black History month conducted internet research to identify high-quality websites devoted to Africa and peoples of African descent. Created a 24-page resource guide of websites and descriptions of information posted at those sites. The guide was mailed to Greater Cincinnati grade school and high school teachers and others interested in this topic.

Prentice-Hall: under direction of Dr. Joan Ferrante, took and developed photographs for two photo essays to be included in The Social Construction of Race and Ethnicity (2nd edition), edited by Joan Ferrante and Prince Brown, Jr. The photo essays are titled Can Family Members Really Belong to Different Races?" and "Known Ancestries and Race."

Rainbow Express Transportation Company (a transportation service for mentally and physically disabled): visited company offices and observed interactions among employees; accompanied drivers who transport people and observed their interactions with clients; constructed a client satisfaction survey; coded and analyzed responses, wrote a report.

St. Elizabeth Hospital, Elder Med Program: assisted director of Elder Med Program in designing a survey to determine members' needs and satisfactions with that service; coded data; wrote report; and presented findings.

Services United for Mothers and Adolescents (SUMA): constructed an outcome assessment instrument to help agency determine its effectiveness at preventing teen pregnancy prevention.

Society for the Study of Social Problems: prepared an ethnic restaurant guide for sociologists and other professionals attending the annual meeting in Cincinnati; sent questionnaires to 40 downtown area restaurants asking proprietors if they believed their restaurants offered an especially unique ethnic atmosphere and to explain why.

State of Kentucky, Judicial Branch: studied the effect recent DUI legislation has had on the number of DUI-related arrests and on the percentage of the state prison population serving time for DUI offenses.

State of Kentucky, Court Improvement Project: under the direction of Dr. Paul Knepper retrieved data, made court observations, reviewed files, coded data, and assisted in report writing. The goal of this state-level project was to speed up the process by which youth are placed in foster care and to determine whether Kentucky is conforming to federal law on these matters.

Talbert House, SAMI Program: coded and entered data on clients enrolled in the SAMI program to determine the program completion rates and establish profiles of those who completed the program versus those who dropped out. Wrote a report.

Urban Appalachian Council: designed a questionnaire aimed at gathering information about recycling behaviors in the lower Price Hill Community; administered survey, coded data, wrote a report and presented findings to board.

Urban Appalachian Council: Assess Urban Appalachian Council's presentations and workshops by analyzing participants answers to questionnaires completed after each presentation or workshop. Questions asked participants to rate presentations/workshops according to the content, quality, usefulness, and practicality of the information. Open-ended questions asked participants to rate the workshop's usefulness, to suggest improvements, and to offer other relevant comments were also included in the analysis.

Viox Services, Inc.: assisted with a variety of research projects involving statistical analysis, survey construction, interviewing, and focus groups.

Woodfill School, PTA: assisted PTA members in constructing an assessment instrument to evaluate KERA as implemented in that school.
