National CEO Conference is a
Huge Success for NKU
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – People gathered around to hear the man of the hour. The event was held at McCormick Place, a massive convention center where tens of thousands convened on the evening of the president’s re-election in 2012. But this was not a typical election eve event and the speaker was not the President of the United States.
The evening belonged to the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, which held its annual National CEO Conference Nov. 1-3 in Chicago, and the keynote speaker was Jeff Hoffman, Founder and CEO in the Priceline.com Family of Companies. The night marked the culmination of a weekend filled with activities including networking, leadership development sessions and the National Elevator Pitch Competition. This life-changing experience brought together nearly 1,500 college students, faculty and entrepreneurs from across the United States.
Northern Kentucky University was represented well, as four students made the trip, participated in many educational sessions and served as volunteers to help register participants and video tape interviews. The NKU chapter also entered the national award competition pitting the university’s students against those from other schools across the country. The plan submitted was a summary of the chapter’s vision, mission, products/services, target markets and financial projections and NKU was awarded First Place for Best Chapter Business Plan.
“The CEO Conference was an amazing experience,” NKU CEO member Rhonda Towns said. “If there is one thing I can say I learned from all of the different speakers that was most valuable to me, it was to find your niche. Find something you are passionate about and just do it. Don’t sit on the sidelines, get in the game.”
The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization is a student organization that focuses on networking in the entrepreneurial community by bringing in various guest speakers, visiting various local businesses, and attending the national conference to learn from other CEO organizations around the world. The group also helps develop business ideas for students and is in the process of exploring the feasibility of establishing a business at NKU.
