Management

The major in management is designed to provide graduates with the fundamental personal, interpersonal, conceptual, and technical knowledge and skills they need to manage organizational operations and resources effectively. All students are expected to master a variety of business communication forms (e.g., formal presentations, written reports) and to develop basic behavioral competencies necessary for those who intend to plan, organize, lead, and control the work of others in an organization. These behavioral competencies imperatively include team-building and small-group management skills. Management students must also analyze complicated business problems and seek to become adept at using both quantitative and qualitative decision-making techniques.

Kathy Espinosa-Seabrooks, '07

Kathy Espinosa-Seabrooks knew that Hispanics’ needs were not always fulfilled in the United States. But she had no idea that one day she would play a part in fixing the predicament.

Born and raised in Acapulco, Mexico, Espinosa-Seabrooks had drive. She had leadership skills. She wanted to earn a college degree.

She came to America, came to NKU and majored in management. After interning twice at Kroger, she noticed the large grocery chain was missing out on an opportunity to market foods to the area’s growing Hispanic community.

“I was driven more by the desire to solve a problem that was very clear to me,” she says.

In May 2006, the Hispanic population in the United States reached an estimated 42.7 million people, which makes Hispanics the largest and fastest-growing minority group. Kroger allowed Espinosa-Seabrooks to pilot her program, which was successful. Now, La Tiendita, or “The Little Store,” can be found inside numerous Kroger stores, offering specialty items for the Hispanic community.

“I was 22 years old with absolutely no previous related experience,” she says.

But it worked. After all, you never know when a dream will come true.
