Christian Moerlein will be subject of German-American Day presentation

Greg Hardman

The story of Christian Moerlein, a German immigrant who played a major role in Cincinnati's beer brewing history, will be presented as part of National German Week on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 5-7 p.m. in room 110 of the Landrum Academic Center.

The departments of World Languages and Literatures and History and Geography are sponsoring the presentation. The speaker will be Greg Hardman, president and chief operating officer of Christian Moerlein Brewing Company., a leading craft beer producer in the Midwest region.

The presentation focuses on the company's namesake, who was born in Bavaria in 1818 and settled in Cincinnati in 1841. He founded the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company, a highly successful business that shipped to places as far as Europe and South America during its peak of operation.

In 2010, Hardman's company resumed brewing Christian Moerlein beer in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine brewery district, which had been dormant since the start of prohibition in 1919. He also led the effort to open the Moerlein Lager House, a brewpub next to Great American Ballpark that's a tribute to the city's brewing tradition.
