Department of Marketing

The American Marketing Association says Marketing is ”an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders.” The Faculty of the Department of Marketing at NKU is committed to preparing our graduates to launch successful careers that quickly progress to leadership roles in managing the function and process of marketing.

What does a Marketing Manager do?

Successful marketing leaders embrace the Marketing Concept, the business philosophy that holds that an organization should seek to make a profit by serving the needs of customer groups in a manner that creates more value than its competitors. Successful marketers think strategically from the perspective of their business, their customers, and their supply chain to find more effective and efficient processes to create and continually increase value for all parties. These marketing leaders share certain imperatives such as:
  • Creating a customer focus throughout the organization;
  • Listening to the customer;
  • Targeting customer markets precisely;
  • Managing for profitability, not sales volume;
  • Managing organizational culture along with organizational strategy;
  • Committing to continuous innovation;
  • Measuring and managing customer expectations, and, most importantly;
  • Building relationships and loyalty with customers and supply chain partners.

How do we prepare our graduates to become organizational leaders?

The Department of Marketing offers two distinctive Bachelor of Science degree programs to our students.  The B.S. in Marketing prepares you for a marketing career in virtually any business or not-for-profit environment.  For those students who wish to pursue a career in the sports and recreation industry, we offer a more focused B.S. in Sports Business. Both degree options place an emphasis on developing a solid foundation of general business knowledge to facilitate strategic thinking. You will also learn how to analyze, understand, and communicate with markets, develop critical thinking capabilities, and grow your teamwork and leadership skills.
