Creating a Basic Website in Dreamweaver CS5

Setting up the Site

  1. On the media you will use to store your pages (preferably a flash drive, although the scratch drive will do), create a folder called "webs."
  2. Open Dreamweaver. Create your site by using the "Site Wizard," as follows:
    1. Choose Site>Manage Sites>NewSite
    2. In the dialogue box that appears, choose "Site" from the left hand navigation bar:
      1. Next to the fill-in field labeled "Site Name," name your site (be descriptive--you may end up managing more than one website).
      2. Next to the fill-in box labeled "Local Site Folder," browse to the folder you created in #1 above.
    3. Choose "Servers" from the left hand navigation bar. Click "+". A dialogue box will appear. Enter the following:
      1. Server name: NKU
      2. Connect using: FTP
      3. FTP Address: For most of you, this will be "studenthome.nku.edu." For a few of you who have been staff at some point in the past, this may be "www.nku.edu." If you aren't sure, don't worry--we will test it shortly.
      4. Username: enter your NKU username
      5. Password: enter your NKU password
      6. Click "Test." You will be notified either that you connected successfully, or that you did not. If unsuccessful, ask me about it.
      7. Root directory: www/
      8. URL: http://studenthome.nku.edu/~username OR http://www.nku.edu/~username (depending upon what worked in #2,c,3 above)
      9. Ignore "More Options" for now.
      10. Click "Save." Click "Save" again. Click "Save" once again.
    4. Assuming success, the "Local Files" for your site should appear on the right-hand panel.
    5. Note: Once you have set up your site using the New Site utility, you do not need to do it again. Your site is already set up as long as your settings remain the same. You may change your settings by using the Edit Site utility.

Adding pages to your site

  1. Now create a webpage for your site. To do this, choose File>New>BlankPage>html>Create. A blank page will appear on the screen.
  2. When you have completed your page, save it by choosing File>Save. It will appear on in the right hand "Files."
  3. Move your file to the Internet by clicking the up-arrow.
  4. Congratulations—You have created your first webpage!
