What is athletic training?

Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

For a more information on athletic training please visit the National Athletic Trainers’ Association website.

Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training

The Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training is an allied health degree offered in the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Educational Foundations in the College of Education and Human Services. It provides coursework and a concurrent clinical education program to prepare students for a career as a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC). The program is designed to meet the standards and guidelines of an accredited education program for athletic training, as mandated by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

The ATEP is five consecutive semesters with two summer one credit hour practicum courses. The academic plan consists of a 66-hour curriculum designed to provide formal instruction of the NATA educational competencies. Click on the sample academic plan link or university catalog link below for further details.

The concurrent clinical education component provides students a hands-on practical experience. Under the supervision of an athletic trainer, students apply what they learn in classroom to real-world patient care. For more details click on the clinical education program link below.

ATEP has limited and selective enrollment. Please see admission requirements and the university catalog for further details
