Northern Kentucky University invites applications and nominations for the position of chairperson of the Department of Mathematics. The position would begin July 1, 2009.
The Department offers undergraduate study in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education.
The Department has 20 full-time tenure-track positions. All tenure-track faculty have doctorates. Full-time lecturers and part-time faculty assist in serving roughly 3,300 undergraduate students per semester in mathematics and statistics. A small number of graduate courses are offered to support master’s degrees in education and other areas. Developmental mathematics is a separate program.
The Department emphasizes high-quality teaching. The standard teaching load is 12 hours per semester. Continued scholarly activity and service are also required.
The Department has approximately 120 undergraduate majors. There are about 70 majors in mathematics and 50 in mathematics education.
The Department is a component of NKU’s Center for Integrated Science and Mathematics (CINSAM), one of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Programs of Distinction. CINSAM provides support for faculty involved in undergraduate research or projects with schools or high-technology companies in the area.
The department has recently approved a BS degree in statistics. Contingent on approval by the university, it will begin accepting students in the fall semester, 2009. The Burkhart Consulting Center provides students with an opportunity to apply the statistics they have learned.
The department also works closely with the Kentucky Center for Mathematics, a research and professional development center that supports the teaching and learning of mathematics in the Commonwealth through targeted projects. Current KCM projects include a mathematics coaching initiative and intervention programs for elementary students.
NKU was founded in 1968 and is located in suburban Cincinnati, Ohio – just seven miles from downtown. The Department is located in the Applied Science and Technology Building, which opened in 1990.
NKU’s enrollment is approximately 14,800 students. Approximately 13,000 are undergraduates, and over 85% are commuters. FTE enrollment is over 9,500.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics or a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in mathematics education. Applicants should have evidence of a commitment to undergraduate education, excellence in teaching, administrative and leadership skills, and a record of continued scholarly activity. Applicants must have a record of teaching, scholarly activity, and service that would justify appointment as a professor or associate professor.
