A health maintenance organization is a type of health care plan an individual may choose when selecting medical coverage. An HMO network contains health care professionals and facilities that provide health care for a set amount of money for a specific time period. The HMO contracts these professionals and facilities and a patient participating in an HMO must stay within the network when seeking medical care.
