The epidermis is composed of 5 sublayers and the dermis is composed of 2 sublayers, the papillary layer and the reticular layer.

Notice that the slide to the right lacks a stratum lucidum.  Remember, that sublayer is found only in the palms of the hand and soles of the feet and is seen in the slide to the far right. This layer can be seen in the two slides below.

The 2 layers of the root sheath are epithelial in nature, while the dermal sheath is composed of connective tissue.  

The function of the papilla is to provide nourishment to the hair.
