SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION The Federation of Fly Fishers (South Eastern Council) $1,000 college grant program (in honor of Fred Stevenson - founding president of the FFF/SEC). Application deadline: May 15, 2008 My name is Mike Arnold. I am the
VP-Education for the Federation of Fly Fishers South Eastern Council.
The FFF South Eastern Council has a $1,000 college grant program
(in honor of Fred Stevenson - founding president of the FFF/SEC). The
Council makes this grant available to qualifying students of "public"
colleges and universities within the geographical boundaries of our
Council (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana (East of the
Mississippi River), Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and

Applicants must be students registered at a fully accredited public college or university within the FFF South Eastern Council geographical region (AL, GA, KY, LA (east of the Mississippi River), MS, NC, SC or TN) and must be in at least their sophomore year of college. 2. Applicants must be majoring in a field of study that fosters the preservation of and/or protection of gamefish or their habitats; for instance, a field relating to aquatic or wetland ecology might qualify as well as more obvious curricula dealing with fish biology, restoration ecology, fisheries management, etc. 3. Applicants must have a 3.0 (of a possible 4.0) G.P.A. or better. 4. Applicants must send a certified copy of his/her transcript plus a statement (at least one page long) explaining how the award monies will further the recipient's career goals to the Scholarship Awards Committee. ______________ Notes: As of the 2003 FFF/SEC board meeting, applications can come from both undergraduate and graduate students. As of the 2004 FFF/SEC board meeting there is no FFF membership requirement; applicants who are either themselves an FFF member or who have an immediate parent or guardian who is an FFF member will be given preferential status over non-members. What constitutes an appropriate field of study is left largely to the scholarship committee to decide, but a broad concept will possibly enlarge the potential pool of applicants. Submission materials given to the Board of Directors of the Northern Kentucky Flyfishers:
All application materials must be submitted to the Board of Directors of the Northern Kentucky Flyfishers by the deadline announced at the time of applications. The Board of Directors of the Northern Kentucky Flyfishers will announce the Scholarship recipients within a month of the close of applications. It is the expectation of the Northern Kentucky Flyfishers that the scholarship recipients will use the award to further their education through their continued undergraduate research activities. In August, following confirmation from the Chairperson of the Biological Sciences Department that the student is enrolled at the University for Fall Semester classes, and is continuing to work actively on the project described in their application materials, a check for the full amount of the scholarship will be sent to the student. It is anticipated that the award recipients will be among the honored guests at the club's annual banquet in November. At that time they will be presented with a certificate in honor of their award. Red Barrington Scholarships are renewable for subsequent years at the discretion of the club based upon continued eligibility of the applicant and quality of their research project. [The William H. DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AWARDS THE JOHN W. THIERET UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARD (Nominations due to Biological Sciences office by March 15, 2008) Sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences at Northern Kentucky University The award consists of a check for $150.00. The recipient's name will be engraved on a plaque located adjacent to the entrance to the department office, and he/she will be recognized at the Senior Awards Reception Spring Semester. This undergraduate research award is designed to recognize a graduating senior, biology major, who has done original research of publishable quality in the biological sciences. The following criteria must be met:
Application due: March 15, 2008 The Clara L. Richards Awards in Biology were established in 1982 by Mr. Edward C. Richards in memory of his wife, who was long associated with Northern Kentucky University. Clara Richards joined the faculty of Northern as a part-time instructor in 1959. She became a full-time faculty member in 1965 and was made chairperson of the Department of Biological Sciences in 1970. After retiring as chairperson in 1973, she remained affiliated with Northern's Allied Health Programs until her death in 1979. One or more awards of $250 will be made. Completed applications, including a letter of support from a member of the faculty must be submitted to the Department of Biological Sciences. Recipients will be notified in early May. Criteria for the awards include:
OUTSTANDING GRADUATE IN BIOLOGY AWARD Applications due: March 15, 2008 Each year the Faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences recognizes one of our graduating seniors as The Outstanding Graduate. This award includes recognition during our Senior Awards Ceremony, placement of the recipient's name on a plaque located outside the departmental office, and a check for $100. Eligibility for this award is, to a large extent, based on the individual's cumulative GPA. However, in making the final decision there are several other areas of consideration. These areas are as follows:

NKU UNIVERSITY-WIDE STUDENT AWARDS (Applications due February 22, 2008 (the award nominations are due to Paula Stapleton in AC 836 on Friday, February 22 with the anticipated selections being made by the end of March) The Regents Award is given to a senior student who has demonstrated professionalism and leadership within the University Community and who has an emphasis on continuation of graduate level work. A minimum grade point average of 3.3 is required. The student may show evidence of the intent to pursue further educational opportunities. This award will be presented upon completion of degree requirements. The award does not have to be given if the committee determines there are no suitable nominees during a particular year. This award is sponsored by the Northern Kentucky University Board of Regents. The Paul J. Sipes Award is presented to an outstanding senior student who displays (through documentation provided by the nominator and nominee) the personal qualities of honesty, character, and industry and who has actively participated in community affairs. The person will also be strong academically, and, although a specific grade point average is not required, the individual's academic record should be given equal weight along with the listed personal qualities and community involvement. This award will be presented upon completion of degree requirements. The award does not have to be given if the committee determines there are no suitable nominees during a particular year. The University Service Award is given to a senior student who has provided outstanding service to the University through: (1) student involvement in such areas as sports, fraternity/sorority affiliations, intramural, student government, student organizations, the northerner, etc; (2) student involvement in civic organizations or agencies such as Easter Seals, Redwood, Boys Club, YMCA, Boy and Girl Scouts, Welcome House, etc.; and (3) academic achievement such as student publications, student presentations, grade point average, etc. While a minimum grade point average of 3.00 is required, the individual's academic record should be given equal weight with student involvement in both university and community activities. This award will be presented upon completion of degree requirements. The award does not have to be given if the committee determines there are no suitable nominees during a particular year. The Excelsior Award is presented to an outstanding senior student who has overcome great obstacles to achieve his/her academic pursuits. These obstacles could be physical, emotional, financial, age, etc. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required. This award will be presented upon completion of degree requirements. The award does not have to be given if the committee determines there are no suitable nominees during a particular year. The award is sponsored by Student Development. The President's Award is given to a senior student who has greatly contributed to the development of a strong sense of community at Northern Kentucky University through special efforts to: break down barriers of discrimination, or promote international awareness or promote the interaction of traditional and nontraditional students, or promote diversity, or promote handicap awareness and access. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required. This award will be presented upon completion of degree requirements. The award does not have to be given if the committee determines there are no suitable nominees during a particular year. This award is sponsored by the Student Activities Office. The Faculty Senate Award is given to a senior student who has demonstrated exceptional skills and productivity in an independent study project. An independent study project is defined as a faculty-supervised research or scholarly work, which has as its goal the publication, presentation and/or exhibition of the results. The project should be conducted outside of a formal classroom and last at least one semester, preferably longer. This award will be presented upon completion of degree requirements. This award does not have to be given if the committee determines there are no suitable nominees during a particular year. This award is sponsored by the Faculty Senate.
