Quetzales

The resplendent quetzal (Pharomachus mocinno), a member of the trogon family,  is   the colorful bird that draws many people to the cloud forests of Costa Rica.  The males have vibrant green feathers with a bright red chest and long tail feathers (18 to 32 in. long). The females are more subtle, and to not have this long tail. They have a soft , mellow whistle  which haunted us on our afternoon hike.  They often perch in tall avocado trees where they eat the small green fruit.
