Cougars snap five-year losing streak against Norse

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Andrea Voss and Heather Bonde combined for 25 kills and 11 blocks Friday night as the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville volleyball team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 30-24, 30-26, 33-31, in Regents Hall.

Bonde finished with 13 kills and seven blocks for SIUE, which improved to 16-3 overall, 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Voss added 12 kills and a .435 hitting percentage for the Cougars, who won for the first time ever in Regents Hall and snapped a five-year losing streak against the Norse.

The Cougars’ only other victory against NKU came on Sept. 25, 1998, when SIUE pulled off a five-game upset of the Norse at Edwardsville, Ill.

Kristin Koralewski led NKU with 13 kills, while Nicole Salisbury added 11 kills. The Norse hit just .142 for the match and dropped to 12-7 overall, 5-1 in the GLVC.

In the opening game, NKU managed just a .088 hitting percentage and dropped a 30-24 decision. Voss had five kills and a .667 hitting percentage to lead SIUE in the first game.

SIUE held a 27-24 lead in the third game, but the Norse rallied and eventually took a 30-29 advantage. The Cougars, however, scored four of the final five points and won the match when Voss and Tina Talsma combined to block Koralewski’s attack attempt.

Kindra Westendorf added 10 kills and a .455 hitting percentage for SIUE, and setter Krystal Majernik recorded 43 assists. NKU setter Marcela Cunha finished with 37 assists.

NKU senior right-side hitter Cammi Welter became just the sixth player in Norse history to reach 1,300 career kills when she slammed down a winner in the opening game. Welter now has 1,308 career kills and ranks No. 6 on the Norse's all-time list.

NKU will play host to the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 2 p.m. Saturday.
