NKU WINS THIRD STRAIGHT GLVC TITLE

Norse defeat Southern Indiana, 5-1

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Lauren Spears and Elizabeth Brunsman both won singles matches and also teamed for a victory at No. 2 doubles Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University women’s tennis team captured its third consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference title with a 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Indiana.

NKU, which also won GLVC titles in 1998 and ’99, improved to 13-1 this fall. NKU has now won 38 consecutive matches against GLVC opponents, and the Norse have not lost to a conference team since the 1997 season.

NKU took a 2-1 lead Saturday as the No. 1 doubles team of Jamie O’Hara and Claudia Ruehl posted an 8-6 win over the USI team of Michelle Lenahan and Emily Blinzinger. Spears and Brunsman also recorded an 8-4 win over Nicole Freyberger and Jenny Ravellette at No. 2 doubles.

NKU clinched its third straight GLVC championship as Spears, Brunsman and Amity Chapman posted wins in singles competition.

NKU will also compete in the spring and attempt to earn its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
