NKU KNOCKS OFF UMSL, 2-0, IN GLVC 1ST ROUND

 

WILDER, Ky. - Sophomore forward Betsy Moore scored two goals Wednesday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 2-0, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Moore, a graduate of McAuley High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, gave NKU a 1-0 lead 22 minutes into the first half with a goal on a penalty kick. She added her second goal of the match early in the second half to give the Norse a 2-0 lead. The 20 goals by Moore is an NKU single-season record. Sophomore goalie Lauren Piening picked up her 13th shutout of the season for NKU.

NKU, ranked No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved its record to 18-2 with the victory. The Norse advance to play Southern Indiana - a 2-0 winner over Wisconsin-Parkside on Wednesday - in the GLVC semifinals at 3 p.m. this Saturday at Edwardsville, Ill.

Southern Illinois at Edwardsville - the No. 1 seed and host - will face Indianapolis in the other semifinal match at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Indianapolis defeated Saint Joseph’s, 1-0, in a first-round match on Wednesday.

The championship match is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. NKU is the defending GLVC Tournament champion.
