TUSCULUM DEFEATS NKU, 1-0

Late goal lifts No. 8 Tusculum in battle of unbeatens

WILDER, Ky. - Elaine Knudsen deflected a ball off a corner kick into the net late in the second half Friday night as Tusculum (Tenn.) College posted a 1-0 win over Northern Kentucky University in a battle of nationally ranked women’s soccer teams.

With the game scoreless in the 76th minute, Ashley Moreira attempted a corner kick. The ball landed among several Tusculum players on the left side of the goal, bounced and deflected off Knudsen into the net.

Goalie Alyssa Alterman picked up the shutout and had seven saves for Tusculum (3-0), which is ranked No. 8 nationally in the Division II poll. NKU (2-1) held a 14-7 advantage in shot attempts, but the seventh-ranked Norse were unable to find the net against Alterman and lost for the second straight year to the Pioneers.

A year ago, Tusculum pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory against NKU at Memphis, Tenn. Knudsen also scored the winning goal against NKU in that game.

The Pioneers now hold a 2-1 lead in the all-time series against the Norse.

Two years ago, NKU posted a 2-1 victory against Tusculum at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

NKU goalie Lauren Piening finished with three saves. Kristen Votapek attempted six shots for the Norse.

NKU will meet 15th-ranked Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Christian Brothers dropped a 1-0 decision to Ashland University earlier on Friday in the John Toebben Classic.
