WILDER, Ky. - Jayme Light scored two goals Sunday as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated Saint Josephs College, 3-0, at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Michelle Kelly added a goal as NKU extended its unbeaten streak against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents to 59 consecutive matches. The Norse (5-2 overall, 2-0 GLVC) controlled the field the entire match and finished with an 18-6 advantage in shot attempts. Kelly gave NKU a 1-0 lead 16 minutes into the game when she took a long pass from Amy Martini off a direct kick and beat Saint Josephs goalie Katie Awerkamp for a goal. Two minutes later, Light extended the Norse advantage to 2-0 when she scored her first collegiate goal off a cross from Kristen Votapek. Light, a freshman and a graduate of Colerain High School, added her second goal 11 minutes into the second half on a header off a cross from Jeanna Goettelman. NKU goalie Lauren Piening picked up her fourth shutout of the season and had one save. NKU is now 53-0-6 against GLVC teams during the past five years. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU. The Norse, ranked 23rd nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, upped their lead in the all-time series against Saint Josephs to 6-1-1. The Pumas dropped to 0-4-3 overall, 0-1-1 in the GLVC. NKU will play at Quincy University at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The Norse will also visit SIUE at 3:30 p.m. next Sunday. |
