WILDER, Ky. - Amy Law and Jeanna Goettelman each scored goals Friday night as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team posted a 2-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Kristen Lies and Amy Martini had assists as NKU - ranked 23rd nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - handed eighth-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside (5-1) its first loss of the season. The Norse (4-2) also extended their unbeaten streak against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents to 58 consecutive matches. NKU is now 52-0-6 against GLVC teams during the past five years. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU. Law gave NKU a 1-0 lead with just 39 seconds remaining before halftime when she took a pass from Lies and beat Wisconsin-Parkside goalie Abbigale Wild with a shot that landed in the right corner of the net. It was Laws third game-winning goal of the season. Goettelman iced the game for NKU 13 minutes into the second half when she took a pass from Martini and finished the play with her first career goal. Lauren Piening picked up the shutout and recorded one save as NKU opened GLVC play with a victory over the defending league champion. Wisconsin-Parkside ended NKUs five-year reign as GLVC Tournament champion last fall by edging the Norse in a penalty-kick shootout. That match, however, is officially recorded as a 1-1 tie. NKU leads the all-time series against Wisconsin-Parkside by a 7-1-2 margin. The Rangers have not defeated NKU since the 1997 season. NKU will play host to Saint Josephs College at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. |
