HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team, now 5-1 after posting a 6-2 win at Mercyhurst (Pa.) College on Sunday, will begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend with road matches at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (8:30 p.m. on Friday) and Quincy University (4 p.m. on Sunday). NKU is ranked No. 4 nationally in the latest Division II poll. The Norse are also currently tied for No. 1 in the NCAA II Central Region rankings with Minnesota-Duluth (7-0). Missouri-St. Louis owns a 2-3 record, and Quincy is currently 2-1. A year ago, NKU defeated Missouri-St. Louis twice (3-1 in the regular season, 2-0 in the GLVC Tournament), and the Norse posted a 7-0 victory against Quincy in their only meeting. NKU is the two-time defending champion of the GLVC Tournament, and the Norse were the preseason favorites of the GLVC coaches to again win the conference championship. RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE: Junior forward Betsy Moore scored a school-record four goals Sunday afternoon as the Norse defeated Mercyhurst (Pa.) College, 6-2, at Erie, Pa. The four goals broke the previous NKU single-match record of three, held by four different players - including Moore. Moore tallied her first goal at the 28:32 mark to give NKU a 2-1 lead. She scored three times in the second half - goals at 53:49, 63:01 and 74:22 - as the Norse defeated Mercyhurst for the third time in the past two seasons. A year ago, Moore scored two goals against Mercyhurst during a 3-0 NKU win in the regular season, and she added two assists in a 3-1 Norse victory over the Lakers in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Moore now has scored six goals and added three assists this season. Moore owns the NKU record for career goals with 43 and career assists with 27. She also was named GLVC Player of the Week this past Monday. NORSE NOTES: Junior midfielder Tricia Ruark leads NKU with seven assists, and she is tied with Moore for total points scored with 15. Ruark also has four goals. Sophomore midfielder Bessie Black has scored five goals and has two assists. Sophomore forward Kristen Noakes has scored three goals. Junior goalie Lauren Piening has a 1.41 goals against average and 18 saves. |
