NKU TO HOST KWC, BELLARMINE

Norse women (5-0) begin defense of GLVC title

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will play host to Kentucky Wesleyan College at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

The contest against Kentucky Wesleyan is NKU’s home opener. The Norse will also play host to Bellarmine University at noon Sunday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match. NKU is seeking its fourth consecutive GLVC championship.

NKU is now 5-0 after posting a 12-0 win at Wheeling Jesuit University last Sunday. Tricia Ruark scored four goals to lead the Norse. Ruark’s four goals tied the NKU single-game record, which was set last season by Betsy Moore against Mercyhurst (Pa.).

A graduate of Seton High School in Cincinnati, Ruark also added an assist to tie Moore’s NKU record of nine points in a single contest.

Ruark’s performance enabled the Norse to score a school-record 12 goals. The previous record was 11, set during an 11-0 win over Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne on Oct. 23, 1999.

Jeanna Martin and Kristen Noakes both added two goals for NKU. The Norse built a 4-0 halftime lead Sunday as Ruark, Martin, Moore and Bessie Black scored goals.

Black leads the GLVC in scoring with eight goals and nine assists (25 points).

NKU is now 19-0-2 during its last 21 regular-season matches. The last team to defeat the Norse in a regular-season match was the University of Missouri-Rolla, which posted a 5-3 win against NKU on Aug. 27, 2000.

NKU MEN BEGIN GLVC PLAY FRIDAY: The NKU men’s soccer team begins GLVC action Friday night at 8 p.m. with a match against Kentucky Wesleyan at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

NKU will also play host to Bellarmine at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

NKU is 2-3 after posting a 2-1 win at Southern Virginia University last Saturday. Nathan Gindele and Nathan Klette both scored goals to lead NKU against Southern Virginia.

Joaquin Palomeque continues to lead NKU in scoring with two goals and an assist. Gindele, who also scored a goal during NKU’s 11-1 loss at Virginia Commonwealth last Friday, has a pair of goals this season.
