NKU, WHEELING JESUIT PLAY TO 1-1 TIE

Norse now 13-3-1 after weather-shortened contest

WHEELING, W. Va. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team played Wheeling Jesuit University to a 1-1 tie on Friday in a game that was shortened due to inclement weather.

The game, which was delayed for an hour due to lightning, was called at the 71:25 mark.

Amy Martini scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Jayme Light for NKU, which is 13-3-1 overall. The Norse - ranked 17th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - are now 5-0-1 in the all-time series against Wheeling Jesuit (14-4-1).

NKU is seeded third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, which begins Sunday at campus sites. The Norse will play host to the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m. Sunday in the first round.

The winner of that game will advance to the semifinals at Kenosha, Wis., to meet second-seeded Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at 11 a.m. next Friday (Nov. 5).

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside is the No. 1 seed for the GLVC Tournament, and the Rangers will meet the Bellarmine University/Saint Joseph’s College in the other semifinal. The championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 7.

NKU has won five of the last six GLVC Tournament championships. A year ago, Wisconsin-Parkside ended NKU’s five-year reign as GLVC Tournament champion by edging the Norse in a penalty-kick shootout.

NKU is currently ranked third in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region poll. The top four teams in those rankings will advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Wisconsin-Parkside is No. 1 in the poll, followed by SIUE and NKU. Ashland University is fourth in the poll.
