NKU PICKS UP 2-0 WIN AT MERCYHURST

Votapek scores goal, adds assist as Norse win seventh straight

ERIE, Pa. - Kristen Votapek and Michelle Kelly each scored second-half goals Monday as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Mercyhurst (Pa.) College.

Jayme Light and Votapek recorded assists as NKU won its seventh straight game and improved to 13-3. Norse goalie Lauren Piening notched her 11th shutout of the season and finished with three saves.

Votapek snapped a scoreless tie at the 67:45 mark with her eighth goal of the season. Kelly sealed the victory for NKU at the 83:28 mark with her fourth goal of the fall.

The Norse will play a road game at Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) University at 3 p.m. Friday. NKU will be seeded either second or third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, which begins Oct. 31 at campus sites. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside will play the University of Indianapolis on Monday night, and that outcome will decide the final seeding.

NKU and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville finished 9-1 in the GLVC, while Wisconsin-Parkside is currently 8-1. If the Rangers defeat Indianapolis, they will earn the No. 1 seed by virtue of a goal-differential tiebreaker with NKU and SIUE.

If Indianapolis defeats or ties Wisconsin-Parkside, SIUE will be the top seed due to its win over NKU this season. The Norse would then be the No. 2 seed.

NKU has won five of the last six GLVC Tournament championships. A year ago, Wisconsin-Parkside ended NKU’s five-year reign as GLVC Tournament champion by edging the Norse in a penalty-kick shootout.

If NKU is the No. 3 seed, the Norse will play host to sixth-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis this Sunday. The time of that game will be announced Wednesday night.
