NORSE POST 5-0 WIN OVER LEWIS

Votapek, Kelly combine for three goals, two assists

WILDER, Ky. - Kristen Votapek and Michelle Kelly combined for three goals and two assists Saturday as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Lewis University at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Votapek scored a goal and had two assists, while Kelly notched a pair of goals. Jeanna Goettelman added a goal and an assist for NKU, which did not allow a shot and rolled to its sixth consecutive victory.

Senior sweeper Robyn Withers, playing in her final regular-season home game, recorded an assist and led the Norse defense. Senior goalie Lauren Piening, also playing a regular-season contest at home for the last time, notched her ninth shutout of the season.

Jayme Light also scored a goal for NKU, which improved to 12-3 overall, 9-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse held a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks and upped their lead in the all-time series against Lewis to 6-1-1.

NKU will travel to Erie, Pa., on Monday to take on Mercyhurst College at 2 p.m. The Norse also play a road game at Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) University at 3 p.m. Friday.

NKU will be seeded either second or third in the GLVC Tournament, which begins Oct. 31 at campus sites. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside will play at the University of Indianapolis on Monday, and that outcome will decide the final seeding.

NKU and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville finished 9-1 in the GLVC, while Wisconsin-Parkside is currently 8-1. If the Rangers defeat Indianapolis, they will earn the No. 1 seed by virtue of a goal-differential tiebreaker with NKU and SIUE.

If Indianapolis defeats or ties Wisconsin-Parkside, SIUE will be the top seed due to its win over NKU this season. The Norse would then be the No. 2 seed.

NKU has won five of the last six GLVC Tournament championships. A year ago, Wisconsin-Parkside ended NKU’s five-year reign as GLVC Tournament champion by edging the Norse in a penalty-kick shootout.
