NORSE REMAIN UNBEATEN WITH 2-0 WIN

Sandfoss, Kelly score goals for No. 1 Norse (13-0-1)

WILDER, Ky. - Stephanie Sandfoss and Michelle Kelly scored first-half goals Sunday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeated Saint Joseph’s College, 2-0, at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

The NKU defense picked up its fourth consecutive shutout as the Norse improved to 13-0-1 overall, 6-0-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. NKU - ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - held a 26-5 advantage in shot attempts and controlled the entire match.

Sandfoss gave NKU a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the contest by taking a pass from Aisling Callaghan in front of the net and kicking the ball past goalie Emily Durwood. Sandfoss - who scored the game-winner in the Norse’s 1-0 overtime victory at Hillsdale (Mich.) College on Friday - leads NKU with nine goals this season.

Kelly drilled in a shot from 20 yards at the 40:36 mark to give NKU a 2-0 advantage, and the Norse were never threatened by the Pumas (5-7-1, 2-3-1 GLVC).

NKU is 35-0-3 in its last 38 matches against GLVC teams. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU.

NKU goalies Megan Zalla, Jennie Ulrey and Sam Westerling combined for the shutout and five saves. The Norse now lead the all-time series with Saint Joseph’s by a 4-1-1 count.

NKU will play at the University of Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. this Friday.
