NKU PREPARES FOR SHOWDOWN WITH SIUE

No. 1 Norse seek best start in school history this weekend

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, will play host to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at 5:30 p.m. this Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

NKU will also play host to Quincy (Ill.) University at noon on Sunday.

Betsy Moore tied her own school record with four assists Sunday afternoon as NKU defeated Lewis University, 8-0, at Romeoville, Ill. NKU improved to 12-0 overall, 6-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Moore, who had five assists and a goal over the weekend, was named GLVC Player of the Week on Monday.

Stephanie Sandfoss and Kendra Zinser scored two goals each in the win at Lewis, and Megan Zalla picked up the shutout and had two saves.

NKU will face an SIUE team that owns a 9-1-1 overall record, and the Cougars are 4-1-1 in the GLVC. NKU has never beaten SIUE during the regular season (0-3-1 in the regular season), but the Norse own two wins against the Cougars during GLVC Tournament play.

A year ago, SIUE played NKU to a 1-1 tie at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

If NKU defeats SIUE on Friday, it will equal the best start in the program’s five-year history. NKU also started 13-0 in 1999 before losing on the road to both Southern Indiana and SIUE.

The Norse are 26-0-2 during their last 28 matches in the regular season. The last team to defeat the Norse in a regular-season match was the University of Missouri-Rolla, which posted a 5-3 win against NKU on Aug. 27, 2000.

NKU’s Bessie Black continues to lead the GLVC in scoring with 14 goals and 13 assists. Jeanna Martin ranks No. 2 in scoring with 11 goals and eight assists, while Moore is tied for third with nine goals and 10 assists.

The NKU men’s soccer team will play host to SIUE (10-1-2, 5-0-1 GLVC) at 8 p.m. Friday night at the Town & Country Sports Complex. NKU is now 7-6 overall, 4-2 in the GLVC.

The Norse dropped two road matches last week - 4-1 at Wisconsin-Parkside and 2-1 at Lewis - to fall out of first place in the GLVC.

Carlos Stremi and Serafin Vega both scored first-half goals Sunday afternoon as Lewis defeated NKU, 2-1. Juan Martin DeVoto added an assist as Lewis - the nation’s No. 1 team in the latest NCAA Division II poll - improved to 12-0-1 overall, 6-0-1 in the GLVC.

Lewis held a 2-0 lead with 12 minutes remaining, but Kevin Crone cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal on penalty kick. NKU, however, would not score again and Lewis remained unbeaten.

Jeff Anderson leads NKU in scoring with five goals and four assists. Crone and Joaquin Palomeque both have eight points to rank No. 2 on the team in scoring.

Freshman goalie Nate Madden has three shutouts and a 2.06 goals against average for the Norse.
