HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky Universitys Stephanie Sandfoss has been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in womens soccer. Sandfoss, a senior forward and a graduate of Highlands High School, scored two game-winning goals last weekend as the Norse remained unbeaten (17-0-2) and ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Sandfoss scored a pair of goals Friday night as the Norse posted a 2-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College. She then notched her GLVC-leading 14th goal of the season Sunday during NKUs 3-0 victory over the University of Indianapolis in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. Sandfoss has now earned GLVC Player of the Week honors three times this season. NORSE TO HOST GLVC TOURNAMENT: Top-seeded NKU will play host to fourth-seeded Quincy University (10-7-1) at 6:30 p.m. this Friday in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky. The Norse are seeking their fifth consecutive GLVC championship. In the other semifinal Friday, second-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis (12-6-1) will meet sixth-seeded Bellarmine University (13-5-2) at 4 p.m. The GLVC championship will be played at noon on Sunday. THE STREAKS CONTINUE: NKU, which is ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll for the eighth consecutive week, has never lost (11-0 all-time) in the GLVC Tournament. NKU is 38-0-4 in its last 42 matches against GLVC teams. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU. NCAA PAIRINGS ANNOUNCED THIS SUNDAY: Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced Sunday night. NKU has advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four three straight years. The Norse are currently ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, and the top three teams in that poll will receive berths in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Wheeling Jesuit University, Mercyhurst (Pa.) College, Ashland University and Grand Valley State University are also competing for NCAA Tournament berths in the Great Lakes Region. A first-round NCAA Tournament match between the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the Great Lakes Region will be played Nov. 13. The winner will advance to play at the No. 1 seed Nov. 16 or 17. If NKU is the No. 1 seed, the Norse will play host to the second-round match Nov. 16. |
