CHALK’S GOAL GIVES NKU 1-0 WIN

Norse continue GLVC streak with win over Bellarmine

WILDER, Ky. - Laurel Chalk’s first-half goal Sunday afternoon lifted the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Bellarmine University at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Chalk, a sophomore and a graduate of Glen Este High School, chased down a lead pass from Kendra Zinser on the play and launched a shot from 18 yards out on the left side. Chalk’s shot rocketed past Bellarmine goalie Erin Strouse into the net and gave NKU a 1-0 lead at the 39:33 mark.

It was Chalk’s first goal of the season, while the assist was the fourth for Zinser in 2003.

The NKU defense controlled the entire second half and did not allow a shot after intermission. Bellarmine attempted three shots early in the contest, but the Knights could not solve NKU’s defense during the second half.

NKU improved to 7-2-1 overall, 3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are now 43-0-4 against GLVC teams during the past four years.

NKU has not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over the Norse.

Bellarmine - which entered Sunday’s match unbeaten - dropped to 7-1-3 overall, 1-1-1 in the GLVC. The Knights have not defeated NKU since 1997 and now trail in the all-time series, 5-1-1.

NKU will hit the road next weekend and play at the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 6 p.m. Friday.
