GRAND VALLEY EDGES NKU, 1-0

Tutundzic’s goal lifts Lakers to victory

WILDER, Ky. - Mirela Tutundzic’s goal with five minutes remaining Friday night lifted Grand Valley State University to a 1-0 win over Northern Kentucky University at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

The goal came on a rebound shot after Andi Redmond’s attempt was deflected away by NKU goalie Sam Westerling. Tutundzic retrieved the loose ball and found the net to give Grand Valley State the win.

Grand Valley State, ranked No. 14 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 7-1 with the victory. NKU dropped to 4-2-1.

Both defenses controlled play most of the contest, but Grand Valley State held a 9-4 advantage in shots during the second half. NKU, though, did have two possessions that nearly resulted in goals.

NKU’s Katie Hanck fired a shot from 20 yards that hit the crossbar midway through the second half, and the Norse’s Sam Riley later broke open in the box. Riley, however, tripped after contact was made with a Grand Valley State defender and the ball was cleared out of bounds.

Grand Valley State goalie Melissa Henson picked up the shutout and had three saves.

NKU will play host to the University of Indianapolis at noon Sunday in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. The Norse have won five straight GLVC championships.
