EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Laurel Chalk’s goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation Sunday afternoon snapped a 1-1 tie and gave the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Indiana at Strassweg Field.
With five minutes remaining and the score tied at 1-1, NKU’s Lindsey Thieken spotted Katie Hanck on a Norse throw-in. Hanck dribbled the ball to the end line, and she crossed the ball into the box.
Chalk received the cross in front of the goal and drilled a four-yard shot past Southern Indiana goalie Casey Hrvatin to give NKU a 2-1 lead at the 85:54 mark, and the Norse defense held on for the victory.
It marked the second straight Sunday that Chalk, a sophomore and a graduate of Glen Este High School, scored the game-winning goal for NKU. Last week, Chalk netted the only goal in the Norse’s 1-0 victory against Bellarmine University.
Freshman Amy Law tallied her fifth goal of the season as NKU won its fifth straight match and improved to 9-2-1 overall, 5-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Law’s goal came during the first half and gave the Norse a 1-0 lead.
Southern Indiana tied the score eight minutes into the second half when Kara Marcum scored a goal that was assisted by Rebecca Cripe.
NKU is now 45-0-4 against GLVC teams during the past four years. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU.
NKU will play host to SIUE at 5:30 p.m. this Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
