NKU DEFEATS WHEELING JESUIT, 6-0

Meister, Riley score twice as Norse improve to 14-2-2

WILDER, Ky. - Bobbi Meister and Sam Riley each scored two goals Friday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeated Wheeling Jesuit University, 6-0, at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Katie Hanck and Amy Martini also scored goals as NKU improved to 14-2-2. The Norse defense allowed just one shot and totally dominated play the entire match.

Hanck gave NKU a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the contest by blasting a 10-yard shot past Wheeling Jesuit goalie Marisa Cotungo. Riley extended the Norse’s lead to 2-0 at the 39:30 mark by taking a cross from Meister and finishing the play with a goal.

Meister made it 3-0 just before halftime with a 20-yard shot that sailed over Cotungo into the net, and NKU added three more goals in the second half.

NKU will begin Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament play at 1 p.m. Sunday with a first-round home contest against No. 8 seed Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The Norse finished with a 9-0-1 record in the GLVC and are the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament.

NKU is 49-0-5 against GLVC teams during the past four years. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when SIUE posted a 3-1 win over NKU.

The GLVC Tournament semifinals are set for Nov. 7, and the championship match will be played Nov. 9. If NKU defeats SIUE in the first round, the Norse will play host to the semifinals and championship.

The Norse are seeking their sixth straight GLVC Tournament championship. NKU has never lost (13-0 all-time) in the GLVC Tournament.

NKU is currently ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region poll. The top four teams in those rankings will advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament in November.

NKU is aiming for its fifth consecutive berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
