NKU KNOCKS OFF SJC, 2-1

Norse extend GLVC unbeaten streak to 52

RENSSELAER, Ind. - Katie Hanck and Laurel Chalk each scored first-half goals Friday night as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeated Saint Joseph’s College, 2-1.

Chalk also added an assist as NKU won its eighth straight match and improved to 12-2-1 overall, 8-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse also extended their unbeaten streak against GLVC opponents to 52 with the victory.

NKU is now 48-0-4 against GLVC teams during the past four years. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU.

Hanck started the scoring for NKU at the 33:31 mark when she took a corner kick from Chalk and scored on a header. The Norse extended the lead to 2-0 eight minutes later when Sam Riley crossed the ball from 25 yards into the box, where Chalk finished with a shot from in front of the net.

Hanck now has four goals this season, while Chalk has three goals and two assists. All three of Chalk’s goals this season have been game-winning scores.

Saint Joseph’s (8-8-1 overall, 6-3 GLVC) avoided the shutout when NKU was called for a handball in the penalty box. Maggie Makovec converted the penalty kick at the 72:02 mark to cut the lead to 2-1.

NKU held a 15-4 advantage in shot attempts Friday, but the Norse also had three goals disallowed due to fouls or offside calls. NKU is now 5-1-1 all-time against Saint Joseph’s.

NKU will conclude its road trip at 1 p.m. Sunday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Norse can wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with a victory on Sunday.

NKU is aiming for its sixth consecutive GLVC championship. The Norse are also seeking their fifth straight berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
