NKU CONTINUES GLVC STREAK

Zinser, Kugele each score three goals in 7-0 win

WILDER, Ky. - Kendra Zinser and Katie Kugele each scored three goals Sunday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team posted a 7-0 win over Quincy University at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Amy Martini and Amy Law each finished with three assists as NKU won its seventh straight match and improved to 11-2-1 overall, 7-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse also extended their unbeaten streak against GLVC opponents to 51 with the victory.

NKU is now 47-0-4 against GLVC teams during the past four years. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when SIUE posted a 3-1 win over NKU.

Zinser started the scoring 18 minutes into the game when she headed in a shot off a Martini corner kick and a pass from Law. Katie Hanck made it 2-0 just before halftime by blasting in a shot from 20 yards out.

Zinser added two goals - one off a perfectly placed direct kick from Martini - early in the second half to give NKU a commanding 4-0 lead. Kugele, a freshman forward, added her three goals in the final 22 minutes of play.

It marked the first time in Norse women’s soccer history that two players scored three goals in a game. Kugele also became just the fifth freshman in NKU history to record a hat trick.

Brittany Evans (1997), Jeanna Martin (1998), Betsy Moore (1998), and Law (earlier this season) also scored three goals in a game as freshmen.

Zinser has scored eight goals this season and leads NKU with 20 total points. Kugele has five goals in 2003.

NKU will hit the road next weekend for matches at Saint Joseph’s College (6 p.m. Friday) and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1 p.m. Sunday). The Norse can wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with a pair of victories next weekend.

NKU is aiming for its sixth consecutive GLVC championship. The Norse are also seeking their fifth straight berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
