WILDER, Ky. - Amy Law, Laurel Chalk and Sam Riley each scored second-half goals Sunday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, 3-0, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Kendra Zinser, Shirley Ernst and Katie Hanck all added assists as top-seeded NKU improved to 15-2-2. The Norse limited the eighth-seeded Cougars (10-7) to just one shot the entire match and extended their unbeaten streak against GLVC opponents to 55 with the victory. NKU is now 50-0-5 against GLVC teams during the past four years. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when SIUE posted a 3-1 win over NKU. Law snapped a scoreless tie at the 59:41 mark when she took a pass from Zinser and blasted a 20-yard shot past SIUE goalie Kristin Covalt into the right side of the net. It was the eighth goal of the season for Law, a freshman and a graduate of Glen Este High School Chalk added an insurance goal at the 83:21 mark when she chipped a shot that bounced past Covalt into the net, and Riley capped the scoring in the 88th minute with a goal that was assisted by both Hanck and Ernst. NKU advances to the GLVC Tournament semifinals, which will be played this Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex. NKU will meet fourth-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis - a 2-1 winner over Saint Josephs College on Sunday - at 4 p.m. In the other semifinal, No. 2 seed University of Wisconsin-Parkside will meet third-seeded University of Indianapolis at 6:30 p.m. The GLVC Tournament championship match will be played next Sunday (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m. The Norse are seeking their sixth straight GLVC Tournament championship. NKU is now 14-0 all-time in the GLVC Tournament. NKU is currently ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region poll. The top four teams in the regional poll will advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament in November. NKU, ranked 20th nationally in the Division II poll, is aiming for its fifth consecutive berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. |
