WILDER, Ky. - Sam Riley and Shirley Ernst each scored goals Sunday as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated the University of Findlay, 2-0, in the John Toebben Labor Day Weekend Classic at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The NKU defense limited Findlay to just two shots the entire match as the Norse (2-0) posted their second straight shutout. The Norse, ranked No. 3 nationally in the NCAA Division II preseason poll, also extended their regular-season unbeaten streak to 20 with the victory. NKU has not lost a regular-season game since Oct. 28, 2001, when Mercyhurst (Pa.) College posted a 1-0 victory against the Norse. NKU opened the scoring 15 minutes into the match Sunday when Riley took a pass from Kendra Zinser and found the net from 15 yards out. The Norses defense controlled play after that, and NKU sealed the victory at the 87:48 mark on Ernsts goal off an assist from Katie Hanck. NKU will meet top-ranked Christian Brothers University at 5 p.m. Friday at Memphis, Tenn. Christian Brothers is the defending NCAA Division II national champion. A year ago, NKU posted a 1-0 victory over Christian Brothers at the Town & Country Sports Complex. It was the only loss for the Buccaneers in 2002. |
