NKU OPENS SEASON WITH 2-0 WIN |

Norse defeat Saginaw Valley State on Friday |

WILDER, Ky. - Bessie Black and Stephanie Sandfoss scored goals Friday night as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated Saginaw Valley State University, 2-0, at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Robyn Withers added an assist and helped the defense limit Saginaw Valley State to just three shots as NKU won its season opener for the fifth straight year. The Norse are ranked No. 3 nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II poll. NKU took a 1-0 lead with nine minutes remaining before halftime when Black knocked in a rebound shot. The Norse defense prevented Saginaw Valley State from attempting a shot in the first half. Sandfoss gave the Norse a 2-0 lead off an assist from Withers two minutes into the second half, and NKU controlled the remainder of the match. Megan Zalla, Sam Westerling and Jennie Ulrey combined for the shutout for NKU, which is now 3-0 all-time against Saginaw Valley State. NKU will play host to the University of Findlay - which posted a 2-0 win over Bellarmine University on Friday - at noon on Sunday. |
