WILDER, Ky. - Sophomore Michelle Kelly scored a goal and added an assist Friday as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated Saginaw Valley State University, 4-0, in the John Toebben Labor Day Weekend Classic. Jamie Reynolds, Kendra Zinser and Samantha Riley each added goals for NKU, which won its season opener for the sixth consecutive year. The Norse are now 4-0 all-time against Saginaw Valley State. Reynolds, a graduate of Holy Cross High School in her first contest with the Norse, scored NKUs first goal nine minutes into the game. Zinser tallied her goal at the 11:30 mark with a breakaway goal that was assisted by Katie Hanck, and Riley scored her first collegiate goal two minutes later off an assist from Kelly to give NKU a 3-0 halftime lead. Kelly, a graduate of Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati, capped the NKU scoring at the 71:07 mark with a goal that was assisted by Amy Law. NKU, which is ranked No. 3 nationally in the NCAA Division II preseason poll, allowed just one shot the entire game. The Norse also extended their regular-season unbeaten streak to 19 with the victory. NKU has not lost a regular-season game since Oct. 28, 2001, when Mercyhurst (Pa.) College posted a 1-0 victory against the Norse. In 2002, NKU was 16-0-2 in the regular season. The Norse, who have captured five straight Great Lakes Valley Conference championships, finished with a 20-1-2 record a year ago. The Norse will meet the University of Findlay - which played Bellarmine University to a scoreless tie Friday - at noon Sunday at the Town & Country Sports Complex. |
