LATE GOALS LIFT NKU PAST FINDLAY

Law, Votapek each score in closing minutes as NKU wins, 3-1

WILDER, Ky. - Amy Law’s goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation snapped a 1-1 tie Sunday and keyed Northern Kentucky University’s 3-1 victory over the University of Findlay at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

With the score tied at 1-1 and less than three minutes remaining, Law took a pass from Amy Martini on the right side of the field and fired a 15-yard shot past Findlay goalie Tabitha Goetz to give NKU a 2-1 lead. It was Law’s second goal of the season.

NKU iced the game with just 1:05 remaining when Kristen Votapek chipped a shot over Goetz - who had left the net unguarded to challenge Votapek from 20 yards out - for a goal and a 3-1 Norse lead. NKU improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Findlay dropped to 1-1.

NKU took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the contest when Katie Hanck chased down a lead pass from Votapek and scored a breakaway goal. Findlay, however, tied the game at 1-1 two minutes later on Gina Mortaro’s rebound shot.

The Norse finished with a 12-6 advantage in shot attempts, and NKU held an 8-2 lead in corner kicks. NKU also remained unbeaten (4-0) in the all-time series against Findlay.

Hanck now has two goals and two assists this season for NKU. Votapek - a transfer from Mount Vernon Nazarene University who scored 58 goals at that NAIA school in two years - now has one goal and one assist in two games at NKU.

NKU will return to action this Friday at 8 p.m. with a game against Tusculum (Tenn.) College in the John Toebben Classic at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

NKU is ranked No. 7 in the preseason Division II national poll, while Tusculum is No. 8. A year ago, the Pioneers handed NKU a 2-1 loss in overtime at Memphis, Tenn.
