NKU TIES XAVIER, 1-1

Norse play Division I Musketeers to tie in exhibition match

WILDER, Ky. - Betsy Moore scored a goal at the 60:28 mark Sunday night to allow the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team to play Xavier University to a 1-1 tie in an exhibition match at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Moore’s goal came 28 seconds after Lauren Garber had given Xavier a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal. Moore took a pass from Bessie Black and found the net to tie the match at 1-1.

Moore, a senior forward and a graduate of McAuley High School in Cincinnati, enters her final season as NKU’s all-time career leader in goals with 52. She also ranks No. 2 in school history with 31 assists.

The Norse missed two chances in the first half to take leads when Moore and Black both were wide on breakaways. Black nearly gave NKU the lead late in the match with another breakaway, but Xavier goalie Megan Veith made the save to preserve the tie.

A year ago, Xavier posted a 14-7-1 record and captured the Atlantic 10 Conference championship. NKU finished the exhibition portion of its schedule 1-0-1, including a 2-0 win over Ohio University.

NKU, which is ranked No. 2 nationally in the NCAA Division II preseason poll, will begin the regular season Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. against Northwood (Mich.) University in a match that will be played at University Center, Mich.
