HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Northern Kentucky University womens golfer Kim Keyer-Scott shot a 1-over-par 74 Wednesday and is in first place after the opening round of the NCAA Division II national championships. Keyer-Scott, a sophomore who qualified for the national finals as an individual, finished the first round atop the leader board at the par-73 El Campeon Golf Course. She enters the second round of the 72-hole competition with a two-stroke lead over Emily Russell (76) from the University of Northern Colorado. Three other golfers - Sarah Coleson, Meredith Easley and Rachel McFarland - finished the opening round with a total of 77 and are tied for third place. Keyer-Scott is looking to become the first NKU golfer to win the individual national championship. The NCAA Division II national finals will continue through Saturday. A year ago, Keyer-Scott helped NKU to a third-place finish at the national championships. She finished in 15th place individually with a four-round total of 329 (+37) at the Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Mich. Keyer-Scott entered the national championships with a stroke average of 78.6 this season. She also earned All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors in the fall after leading NKU to its first-ever GLVC title. |
