NKU WOMEN TO FACE TOUGH SCHEDULE

Norse to host Elite Eight participants Southern Indiana, Delta State

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team will open up the 2001-02 season Nov. 20 with a game against Georgetown (Ky.) College in Regents Hall.

NKU, which posted a 25-5 record last season and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament, will meet 2001 NCAA II Elite Eight participant University of Southern Indiana on Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Regents Hall. NKU and Southern Indiana tied for the GLVC regular-season championship a year ago.

NKU will also host the second annual Community Recorder Classic Dec. 20-21, and 2001 NCAA II Elite Eight participant Delta State University is one of the four teams in the tournament. Delta State will meet Florida Southern College at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 20, while NKU plays University of Alabama-Huntsville in the other first-round matchup.

The Norse will travel to Big Rapids, Mich., Dec. 29 to meet Ferris State University. NKU also has a road contest in Frankfort, Ky., Jan. 16 against Kentucky State University.

Senior forward Michelle Cottrell is NKU’s only returning starter in 2001-02. Cottrell, who was named national player of the year by Division II Bulletin, averaged 17.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game as a junior.

A graduate of Boone County High School, Cottrell has scored 1,710 career points and ranks No. 2 in Norse history. She needs just 174 points to pass Peggy Vincent (1,883 points) as NKU’s all-time leading scorer.
