SCHMIDT JOINS NKU COACHING STAFF

Pennsylvania native named assistant women’s basketball coach

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball head coach Nancy Winstel announced Wednesday that Matt Schmidt has joined the Norse coaching staff as a full-time assistant.

Schmidt, a native of Johnstown, Pa., spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Findlay. He was also an assistant coach at both West Virginia University and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County prior to taking the position at Findlay.

“We are fortunate to find someone the caliber of Matt Schmidt, and I am thrilled to have him join us,” Winstel said. “Matt is a tireless worker, a strong recruiter with good experience, and he is going to be a positive for our program. He knows our region very well since he worked at Findlay, and I am looking forward to having Matt on my staff.”

Schmidt played basketball at West Liberty (W. Va.) State College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in health and physical education. He later earned his master’s degree in physical education at West Virginia University.

Winstel also announced that former NKU standout Michelle Cottrell will join her staff as a part-time assistant this season. Cottrell, who led NKU to the 2000 NCAA Division II national championship, earned All-America honors three times during her career and is the Norse's all-time scoring leader with 2,241 points.

NKU posted a 17-11 record last season and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. The Norse return three starters from that team in 2004-05.
