NKU PREPARES FOR UM-ST. LOUIS, USI

Norse travel to UM-St. Louis on Thursday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team is 5-7 overall after splitting two games at the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Classic last week at Midland, Mich.

The Norse will resume GLVC play this week with road games at Missouri-St. Louis (6:30 p.m. Thursday) and Southern Indiana (2 p.m. Saturday). NKU is 3-3 in the GLVC.

NKU improved to 5-7 last Friday with a 57-51 win at Northwood (Mich.). Connie Myers led NKU with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Brittany Winner added 13 points and eight rebounds. NKU held Northwood to just 30.8 percent shooting from the field, and the Timberwolves did not make a field goal during the final 2:21 of the game.

MYERS MOVES UP IN GLVC STATS: NKU senior forward Connie Myers ranks No. 4 in the GLVC in scoring at 17.8 points per game, and she is No. 2 in rebounding at 8.3 rebounds per contest. Myers is also shooting 51.3 percent from the field, which ranks 11th in the GLVC.

NKU senior guard Elizabeth Burrows ranks No. 4 in the GLVC in assists per game at 4.42 apg. Norse sophomore center Karmen Graham is 14th in the GLVC in rebounding at 6.0 rpg. Graham also averages 11.1 ppg.

ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: The Riverwomen are 2-8 overall, 0-6 in the GLVC. Missouri-St. Louis is led by senior forward Kali Birkey, who averages 15.2 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Birkey is the only Missouri-St. Louis player scoring in double figures.

THE LAST TIME AGAINST MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: On Feb. 7, 2004, Kali Birkey hit a 10-foot jumper with 4.3 seconds remaining in the game to give Missouri-St. Louis a 59-57 win over NKU in the Mark Twain Building.

NKU’s Connie Myers had tied the game at 57-57 with 18.8 seconds remaining when she grabbed an offensive rebound and powered in a layup. After a timeout, Missouri-St. Louis held the ball for the final shot, and Deborah Dibella worked the ball inside to Birkey on the right side of the lane.

Birkey banked in a 10-footer to give the Riverwomen a 59-57 lead with just 4.3 seconds on the clock. NKU hurried the ball down the court, but Nikki Perkins' desperation attempt was off target and Missouri-St. Louis collected just its second win in 14 meetings with the Norse.

THE LAST TIME AGAINST SOUTHERN INDIANA: On Feb. 5, 2004, Jamie Truitt scored 23 points as Southern Indiana defeated NKU, 93-66, at the PAC Arena. Truitt made five three-point shots as Southern Indiana defeated NKU for the first time since 2002. The Screaming Eagles also shot 53 percent from the field and forced NKU into 22 turnovers.

NKU built an 18-10 lead early in the game, but Southern Indiana used a 21-4 run during the final 7:09 of the first half to take a 44-30 advantage at the break. Kennitra Johnson drained a 25-footer just before the halftime buzzer to give the Screaming Eagles a 14-point cushion.

Connie Myers scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead NKU, which had beaten Southern Indiana four straight times going into that game. The Norse, however, shot just 31 percent from the field and allowed Southern Indiana to hit 12-of-19 three-point attempts.

Sharell Snardon added 12 points and seven rebounds for NKU. Betsey Clark came off the bench and scored eight points for the Norse.
