HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team will hit the road this Thursday to meet the University of Indianapolis at 5:30 p.m. in a key Great Lakes Valley Conference game.
NKU enters Thursday with a 7-2 record after posting a 96-64 win over Wayne (Mich.) State University on Monday. The Norse - ranked No. 18 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - are 3-1 in the GLVC and tied with Indianapolis (9-1 overall, 3-1 GLVC) for second place in the conference standings.
NKU will also visit Rensselaer, Ind., this Saturday for a 2 p.m. game at Saint Joseph’s College (5-5 overall, 2-2 GLVC).
The broadcasts of both games can be heard live on WTSJ (1050 AM).
MOBLEY REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS: NKU senior forward Amy Mobley became the 19th player in Norse women’s basketball history to score 1,000 career points when she converted a first-half layup against Wayne State on Monday.
Mobley, who averages 14.0 points per game, now has 1,013 career points. In addition, she has scored in double figures in eight consecutive games.
FLANAGAN ALSO NEARS 1,000 POINTS: NKU senior guard Bridget Flanagan enters Thursday with 952 career points. Flanagan, who averages 13.3 ppg and leads NKU in three-pointers made with 24, scored 15 points against Wayne State on Monday.
POLOSKY GETS DOUBLE-DOUBLE: NKU senior forward Kristin Polosky collected 11 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists against Wayne State. She leads NKU with 47 assists and averages 8.3 ppg.
MYERS JUST MISSES DOUBLE-DOUBLE: NKU sophomore post player Connie Myers, who leads the team in scoring at 16.6 ppg, finished with 16 points and nine rebounds against Wayne State. Myers is shooting 59.8 percent from the field and has scored in double figures in six straight games.
PHILLIPS TIES CAREER BEST IN POINTS: NKU junior center Emily Phillips equaled her career high in points with eight against Wayne State. Phillips, who is shooting 61.5 percent from the field, made all four of her field goal attempts in that game.
STREAK AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: NKU has won 14 consecutive games against Indianapolis. The last time Indianapolis defeated NKU was during the 1995-96 season at Nicoson Hall, when the Greyhounds pulled out a 74-64 victory against the Norse.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds own a 9-1 overall record, including a 3-1 slate in the GLVC. The 9-1 start is the best in the history of Indianapolis women's basketball.
The Greyhounds are led by senior forward Kristen Lowry, who averages 13.6 ppg, 6.7 rebounds per contest and is shooting 60.6 percent from the field. Lowry has also been named GLVC Player of the Week twice this season.
Sophomore guard Erin Moran averages 14.3 ppg and has made 12 of 39 three-point attempts. Sophomore guard Amy Wisser averages 9.8 ppg.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: On Feb. 9, 2002, Michelle Cottrell scored 15 points as NKU defeated Indianapolis, 56-52, at Nicoson Hall. Cottrell, who missed the previous six games with a stress fracture in her right foot, gave NKU a 53-52 lead with 1:52 remaining by making a layup while being fouled and converting the free throw.
Suzie Smith hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 left to give the Norse a 55-52 lead, and Jessica Brock blocked Amanda Davidson’s three-point attempt in the closing seconds to preserve the victory.
Amy Mobley converted a free throw with six seconds remaining to give the Norse a 56-52 advantage. NKU, which trailed 26-21 at halftime, shot 48 percent from the field in the second half to rally for the win. Dana Schubeler added 12 points and 10 rebounds for NKU.
In their first meeting of last season, Cottrell scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as NKU defeated Indianapolis, 66-53, in Regents Hall. Mobley added 10 points for NKU, which made 51.1 percent of its shots from the field.
The Norse won the rebounding battle by a 36-24 margin and limited Indianapolis to 40.4 percent shooting from the field.
STREAK AGAINST SAINT JOSEPH’S: NKU will enter Saturday’s game at Saint Joseph’s with a 17-game winning streak against the Pumas.
NKU has not lost to Saint Joseph’s since the 1993-94 season, when the Pumas posted a 72-67 victory against the Norse at Rensselaer, Ind.
