Norse defeat SIUE, 63-58, for 15th straight victory

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore forward Michelle Cottrell scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Thursday night as the Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team won its 15th consecutive game with a 63-58 victory against Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at the Vadalabene Center.

Freshman forward Amy Mobley added 12 points as NKU improved to 23-2 overall, 18-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. In addition to its current 15-game winning streak, NKU has now won 18 straight road games against GLVC opponents dating back to last season. The Norse’s last loss on the road against a GLVC team came on Dec. 5, 1998, when SIUE posted a 62-61 victory against NKU.

The Norse (ranked No. 4 nationally in the WBCA Division II poll) have clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament that begins on March 1. NKU will play the No. 8 seed, either IPFW or Kentucky Wesleyan, in the first round on March 1.

NKU, which is ranked No. 1 in the latest Great Lakes Region rankings, is also hoping to host the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament. Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced March 5.

The top six teams in the Great Lakes Region poll will qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament. The No. 1 team in the Great Lakes Region will earn the right to host the event.
